Turnitin exists to answer "is this essay copied from something?" — after the essay is finished, when the input path is already opaque. Solus answers a different question earlier: "how did this text arrive in the document?" The paste blocker, the behavioral checks, the tamper-evident ledger, the signed certificate — those are the primary defense. By the time a teacher opens a Solus submission, the most common plagiarism vectors are already closed off at the source.
That's why our plagiarism check can be modest and honest. It doesn't need to be the belt AND the suspenders. The verification is the belt. This is the second-opinion report teachers who want it can run — cross-submission always, web-content optionally, licensed journals never. And for the licensed-journals case, the honest recommendation is: keep Turnitin for those specific submissions and let Solus cover the AI-generation vector Turnitin's classifier can't reliably catch. The two are complementary; we're not trying to replace them.
